Can Ethics Be Taught? Perspectives, Challenges, and Approaches at Harvard Business School.
Piper, Thomas R.; And Others
This book describes in five chapters how the Harvard Business School has redeveloped its curriculum to place leadership, ethics, and corporate responsibility at the center of its mission. Chapter 1, "Rediscovery of Purpose: The Genesis of the Leadership, Ethics, and Corporate Responsibility Initiative," (Thomas R. Piper) describes the context for the ethics education movement in the business world and sets the stage for the public discussion of the place of and methods for teaching ethics in a business school setting. Chapter 2, "Is It Too Late? Young Adults and the Formation of Professional Ethics," (Sharon Doloz Parks) looks at the values, hopes, and receptiveness of contemporary graduate business education students by reviewing the research and examining models of moral development. Chapter 3, "Engaging the Power and Competence of the Faculty," (Mary C. Gentile) documents and describes faculty reactions and contributions to the initiative at the Harvard Business School. Chapter 4, "A Program to Integrate Leadership, Ethics, and Corporate Responsibility into Management Education," (Thomas R. Piper) contains a detailed description of the Harvard program including guiding beliefs, program structure, second-year electives, and community outreach. The book also includes an epilogue (by Thomas R. Piper) and appendixes providing a brief institutional history and a list of internal research projects. Individual chapters include reference notes.
