Development of Microcomputer Simulations for Vocational/Technical Education. Final Report.
Randolph Technical Coll., Asheboro, NC.
A project investigated the feasibility of developing equipment simulations in vocational curricula using videotapes and microcomputers. To conduct the research, two pieces of equipment that could be used in vocational curricula throughout the North Carolina Community College System were chosen: (1) computer numerical control (CNC) lathe used in machine shops and similar operations and (2) electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems. Two computer-assisted instruction (CAI) packages for use in vocational curricula were developed. A program on EFI systems for use in automotive mechanics consisted of two computer diskettes containing a tutorial, graphics simulations, and a recordkeeping system. A program on CNC equipment for use in machine shop curricula included a similar computer package and a videotape segment on the CNC work environment. An instructor's guide accompanied each package. The programs were produced on an Apple IIe microcomputer. A final report and slide/tape presentation on the project were produced. These benefits of CAI were found: lower equipment and materials costs, increased safety, overcoming of problems involved in group demonstrations, and self-pacing. Other conclusions were that initial development of CAI is time consuming and costly, but benefits can be shared and faculty need release time. (Instructor's guides and project materials are appended.) (YLB)
