Rising middle level students face many new situations when they enter middle school. Stress is not uncommon for new students in any grade, but it is most acute during middle level years when students are dealing with the rapidly changing physical characteristics and emotions associated with early adolescence. The community of adults at a middle school can take specific actions to help make this transition easier for the incoming students. This article discusses "Clipper Camp," a transition program at Grafton Middle School in Yorktown, Virginia, that supports rising middle level students and their parents. Students get a boost into the middle level from the transition program that eases anxieties as it familiarizes students with their new school, teachers, and classmates. The goal of Clipper Camp is to remove the negative anticipation caused by entering a new and larger school.
