Restorative practices focus on repairing the harm to relationships rather than piling on more punishment for violations. Originally popularized in formal conferences between a victim and offender in the justice system, restorative practices have been extended to educational and treatment settings. This article describes how the adversarial climate in a residential special school for troubled boys in the United Kingdom was transformed into a community of mutual respect. In a small group format called circles, students learn to express their feelings and respect those of others. Youth are made aware of the consequences of their behavior and recognize the hurt they have caused others.
