Big as Life: The Everyday Inclusive Curriculum. Volume 2.
York, Stacey
This guide is intended to assist early childhood teachers in integrating multicultural, anti-bias education into the curriculum. Following an introduction discussing the goals and elements of a transformative curriculum, Part 1 of this volume presents curriculum units on animals, community, foods, friends, heroes and "sheroes," money, senses, and work. The units include an introductory paragraph, a web, a unit outline, a list of materials to add to classroom interest areas, and activity ideas. Part 2 of the volume describes 9 steps to designing a transformative curriculum: (1) create a collaborative climate; (2) learn about the context; (3) identify the themes; (4) web the unit; (5) outline the web; (6) identify materials to add to the environment; (7) select and plan learning experiences; (8) identify curriculum resources; and (9) transfer the information to lesson plans. Part 2 also contains information on evaluating the curriculum. The concluding section on resources provides information on educational supply companies, resource books, magazines, organizations, and children's music. Appendices list the goals and objectives of a transformative curriculum and provide worksheets and a curriculum planning form. (KB)
