Clay Chess Sets
Cahn, Jeanne
Arts & Activities, v149 n1 p30-31, 40 Feb 2011
For several years, the author has taught a six-week ceramics course to students in grades six through eight. This is an elective class, so only interested and passionate students sign up. In past years, she has given three different assignments using slab, coil, and pinch construction techniques, which allowed for individual creative expression. Having realized that two of her students had taken the class before, the author redesigned the course and focused on the creation of a unique ceramic chess set. In this article, the author describes how the students work on the project using both coil and pinch methods.
