Science Grade 7: A Search for Structure. (Teacher's Manual and 4 Student Manuals.)
Kolb, Haven, Ed.
Included in this set are the teacher's guide and the four student laboratory manuals for the seventh grade science program, "A Search For Structure." The program has three phases, each consisting of student-centered, investigative activities. There are two subject area options in phase one: option A, Rocks and Minerals; and option B, Insects. The primary purpose of phase one is the development of science processes and skills, including observing, classifying, measuring, inferring, predicting, interpreting, hypothesizing, etc. In phase two, "Developing a Model of Matter," students observe the behavior of matter as a basis for developing a model. In phase three, "Living Structures," investigations relate to human body functions and processes. The teacher's manual provides process objectives for each investigation. The manual also includes suggested "assessment tasks" to assist teachers in the evaluation of student progress in attaining the behavioral objectives. The program has been organized on the conceptual scheme basis developed by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Curriculum Committee. The appendices in the teacher's manual include conceptual schemes, behavioral objectives developed by NSTA, a list of behavioral verbs, and other information. The activity format in the student manuals consists of a brief introductory statement, materials, procedure and interpretations. (PR)
