Standardization Activities of Concern to Libraries and National Bibliographies: An Outline of Current Practices, Projects and Publications.
International Federation of Library Associations, London (England). Committee on Cataloguing.
Presented is the compilation of a survey of national bibliographic standardization activities undertaken by the International Federation of Library Associations' Universal Bibliographic Control Office (IFLA UBC). The purpose of the survey was to ascertain and identify the present bibliographic practices in national bibliographies; describe current standardization projects; suggest areas where standards are required; identify problems with the international MARC network which is developing among national libraries with mechanized systems; and investigate the bibliographic standards available for use in mechanized systems. The first part of the survey lists and comments on publications and documents available, describes projects under way, and suggests priority projects which should be undertaken in the following areas: (1) content of each national bibliographic record; (2) coverage of material included in national bibliographies; (3) form of each national bibliographic record; (4) publications of the printed national bibliographies; (5) legal deposit; and (6) cataloging in publication (CIP). The second part provides full bibliographic information for sources used in the preparation of the outline and references with notes on availability and, if possible, price. (Author/JPF)
