Developing and Instituting a Parenting Course for Parents of Children Ages 3 through 14 Years.
Innes, Ruth S.
A licensed counselor working in a privately owned mental health facility implemented a practicum study designed to improve the parenting skills and quality of family communication in families with children between 3 and 14 years of age. Practicum goals were to: (1) give parents information that would improve their parenting skills; and (2) increase cooperative interaction among participating family members. A survey was administered to potential class members to determine what communication and parenting skills were of concern to them. Based on these expressed needs, a parenting class was developed. Practicum evaluation data indicated positive changes in the quality of family communication. Parents significantly improved in parenting skills. Survey instruments are appended. A total of 34 references are cited. (RH)
