Programming for Gender Equity. A Guide for Staff Development.
Soldwedel, Bette J.
This guide is designed to provide educators with ways to organize and implement strategies to ensure that deliberate efforts are made to achieve gender equity. The format allows facilitators to select specific unit content to meet both state and local staff development purposes and to adapt the suggested activities to the special professional development needs of particular audiences. Each unit follows a similar design. An organizing theme briefly describes a relevant gender equity issue. Facilitators are encouraged to expand the theme so that it treats local interests, concerns, and/or issues. Questions for discussion are included to stimulate participation and to serve, if necessary, as clarifiers. Several activities are included that can be pursued either as advance organizers or as follow-ups to augment the organizing theme. All necessary materials are included in the unit. Duplicating masters are appended. The organizing themes (and unit topics) are as follows: knowledge of gender (the concept of gender, the social meaning of gender); gender equity and the school climate (educating girls: the research); gender equity, classrooms, and learning (gender equity in the classroom, learning to learn, equity and the sciences); preparing students for an equitable future (changing work force demographics, counseling for the 21st century careers, gender equity for school improvement); and institutionalizing gender equity (surveying the institutional status of gender equity).
