This book presents information on career opportunities in civil engineering. Chapter 1 focuses on the scope of civil engineering, discussing: role of scientist, engineer, and technologists; engineering and engineering technology; civil engineer's role and obligations; and other information. Chapter 2 considers such aspects of the education for civil engineers as high school requirements, selecting a college/university, curricula, graduate/undergraduate programs, continuing education, educational costs, and financial aid opportunities. Civil engineering specialties are considered in chapter 3, focusing on structural engineering, structural mechanics, transportation engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, and others. Job duties, salaries, and working conditions are considered in chapter 4. Areas discussed include specific job duties, typical assignments for beginning engineers, responsibilities of experienced professionals, wages/salaries and fringe benefits, general employment conditions, and overall demand (past, present, future) for civil engineers. Among the areas discussed in chapter 5 (employment and advancement) are the job market, selecting the right job, opportunities for females and minority groups, membership in professional organizations, and personal development through a civil engineering career.
