The Counselor-in-Residence Program: Reconfiguring Support Services for a New Millennium
Rawls, D. Terry; Johnson, Deanna; Bartels, Elizabeth
Journal of College Counseling, v7 n2 p162 Fall 2004
A decrease in resources and an increase in the severity of student concerns are critical challenges faced by counseling centers. By placing professional counselors in residence hails and directing their efforts toward staff rather than students, a Counselor-in-Residence (CIR) program can focus on prevention, identification of at-risk individuals/groups, and early intervention with the goal of interrupting the escalation of students' emotional difficulties. The authors provide a description of CIR program parameters and operations. Although the primary function of a counselor-in-residence is consultative, counselors-in-residence also provide some direct services. Specifically, they conduct safety assessments, facilitate support groups, counsel students during scheduled "walk-in" times, mediate with parents of students, and intervene as needed in emergency situations. Early efforts to evaluate program outcomes indicate that this model serves students' needs better than did the initial model, thus freeing the university counseling center staff to focus on treatment issues. Until quantitative data are collected, however, the best argument for the success of this program is that it continues to grow at a time when budgets across the institution are being severely cut for a 2nd straight year. Future research evaluations are needed to determine the CIR program's effectiveness and cost benefit when compared with providing traditional counseling center services.
