The Invention of "The Invention of Hugo Cabret"
Selznick, Brian
Journal of Children's Literature, v34 n1 p58-61 Spr 2008
"The Invention of Hugo Cabret" is a story about Georges Melies that the author began thinking about over 15 years ago and took about two-and-a-half years to complete. The book is about a boy named Hugo Cabret, an orphan living secretly in the walls of a train station in Paris who becomes involved in a mystery that ties him together with a mean old man who runs the toy booth in the train station and the old man's goddaughter, Isabelle. The book, nearly 550 pages long, involves the history of magic and most importantly, the early history of cinema, from the invention of the movies in 1895 by the Lumiere brothers, to the introduction of sound in the movies in the late 1920s and early 1930s. In this article, the author shares how he created "The Invention of Hugo Cabret."
