Focusing mainly on television, this document provides facts about the mass media world of children in Sweden. Contents concern (1) toddlers and television; (2) viewing among 3- to 8-year-olds, including the number of children viewing, television in day care centers, times at which children view television, and viewing with others; (3) viewing among 9- to 14-year-olds, including how much they view, how many are viewing, sex differences in viewing, children's preferences, and viewing alone or with someone; (4) video viewing; (5) children, youth, and radio; (6) total mass media consumption; (7) understanding and effects, including discussions of children's ability to understand television, the importance of language to understanding, preschool children's lack of perspective on television, effects of television on young viewers, television as a medium for education, why children watch television, including a look at fear, violence, norms, and values; (8) improvement in Swedish children's over-all situation; and (9) television in the future.
