Children in Contemporary Society. Theme: Staff Development in Programs for Young Children.
Frank, Mary, Ed.
Children in Contemporary Society, v12 n2 Jan 1979
This volume is a collection of eight short articles that address fundamental issues of staff development in programs for young children. Part I covers supervisory principles and techniques, indicates environmental areas in which child care personnel have not been prepared to intervene effectively (Bronfenbrenner's exo and macro system levels), provides guides to speech and action in supervision and outlines a developmental model for personal and professional growth. Part II indicates the variety of educational programs for child care personnel and discusses sponsorship, program content, current trends and future perspectives, competency-based training and certification. A six-step model of a humanized systems approach to teacher performance evaluation is diagrammed and elaborated. Two models of organizational structure (classical and participative) are presented along with two checklists for assessing the organizational features of programs. Part III explores the problems of stress and teacher burn-out in child care programs and provides suggestions for facilitating stress resistance and recovery. The impact of budgetary concerns on staff morale and development is discussed. (Author/RH)
