This curriculum guide was developed to help students gain a broader perspective about child labor and become more familiar with the issues, controversies, and debates that surround it. Three case studies are highlighted: (1) a street child in India; (2) child soldiers in Uganda; and (3) a migrant farm worker child in the United States. Each case illustrates the complex aspects of child labor and was selected to illustrate three very different types of child labor that exist in the world. The guide begins with a unit introduction; a rationale and introduction to lessons; unit goals; connections to curriculum standards; materials needed; time required; suggested sequence of activities; subjects and suggested grade levels; and icons. The lessons are constructed to provide frameworks of study with further research and extension activities listed at the end of lesson three. Lesson 1, "Understanding Child Labor," introduces students to the complexity of child labor through a series of activities and discussions that provide students with some key concepts and basic knowledge. Lesson 2, "The Complexity of Child Labor," focuses on the complexity of child labor and encourages students to think more deeply about the issues that surround it. Lesson 3, "A Closer Look at Child Labor: Case Studies from around the World," allows students to explore issues through a case study approach. Appendixes contain an extensive list of resources to aid further study. (BT)
