Beyond Bilingualism: A Quest for Communicative Competence.
Cheng, Li-Rong Lilly
Topics in Language Disorders, v16 n4 p9-21 Aug 1996
Cross-cultural communicative competence requires more than learning the language; social cultural competence also is necessary. Challenges beyond semantics (word connotations), beyond phonology (significance of subtle pronunciation differences), beyond pragmatics (relating to cognitive style), and beyond translation (the cultural imperatives of the interpreter) must be faced. Anecdotes illustrate the challenge of becoming truly bilingual and bicultural. (DB)
