An Inexpensive Electrodeposition Device and Its Use in a Quantitative Analysis Laboratory Exercise

An experimental procedure, using an apparatus that is easy to construct, was developed to incorporate a quantitative electrogravimetric determination of the solution nickel content into an undergraduate or advanced high school quantitative analysis laboratory. This procedure produces results comparable to the procedure used for the gravimetric determination of nickel in many quantitative analysis laboratory texts. This experiment may be run alone or may be used in conjunction with the gravimetric determination of nickel using dimethylglyoxime to determine the nickel content of a common solution by two methods. The students may then use statistical techniques to compare the two procedures. This system may also be used to study the effects of changes in experimental parameters on the degree of precipitation of the metal via electrodeposition. (Contains 3 tables.)
