So Many Kinds of Navajos.
Underhill, Ruth
Written for both American Indian and non-Indian school children, the purpose of this book is to present a picture of the varied ways of life on the Navajo Reservation in 1970. Facts relating to health, education, employment, and living conditions are presented from the viewpoint of Denny Lincoln, a 12 year old orphan who is placed in a Navajo home. Included in this text are: some American Indian songs; a list of Navajo clans; a kinship and clan chart; an English glossary; a Navajo glossary (the story includes many Navajo words); maps of the Reservation; and a teacher's manual which includes the sound system in the Navajo language, suggested related activities, a discussion of Chaco Canyon re: a field trip, Navajo games, Navajo records, craft ideas, and directions for craft and art activities to be used in conjunction with this text. The 17 chapters include discussion of such activities as sheep dipping, rodeos; a rug auction, a trip to the hospital, the Navajo Fair, and school. Discussion questions are provided at the end of each chapter. For example, Chapter 16 deals with finding Joe Charlie lying in the middle of the street dead drunk and subsequently getting him to the hospital; the questions following this chapter are: Why do you think Joe was becoming an alcoholic? What did Mr. Smithson tell the Charlie family? What is the "antibuse test"? What courses does the ONEO offer? How was Joe going to be helped? (JC)
