Developmental Education Students in Texas Community Colleges: Changes over Time
Saxon, D. Patrick; Slate, John R.
Community College Enterprise, v19 n1 p34-44 Spr 2013
In this investigation, we analyzed student enrollment data from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board accountability website for all Texas community colleges from 2000 through 2011. The numbers and percentages of community college students who were developmental education students were calculated and analyzed to determine changes over time. Statistically significant increases in the numbers of community college students and developmental education students were documented. Of interest, however, was that the mean percent of developmental education students showed a statistically significant decrease during this time period (30.01% in 2000 versus 23.89% in 2011). Implications of our findings are discussed. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)
