Guidelines for Acceptable Electronic Communication with Students

Rarely does a day go by when one doesn't hear or read something relating to digital communication and school. Whether it's referencing cell phones, email, Facebook, texting, blogs, or Twitter, this constant barrage of messages in the media makes it clear that electronic communications are in the forefront of students' lives. They are also an integral part of the lives of many teachers, especially the younger generation. So, what does this mean for school staff wishing to communicate electronically with students beyond the school day? And how can a school district protect itself, students, and staff from the potential dangers and problems inherent with using these technologies? These, and other questions were on the minds of administrators in Community High School District 128 in late 2009. After much discussion and input from school personnel, the district drafted "The District 128 Expectations for Communicating Electronically with Students." The document clearly states three main purposes for the expectations: (1) Protecting the students, staff, and the district; (2) Raising awareness of acceptable ways to use electronic communication tools when communicating with students; and (3) Raising awareness of the positive and negative outcomes that may result in using these tools with students. The expectations document also explains the Transparent Accessible and Professional (TAP) test, to help staff decide if they should be using digital communication.
