The Nature and Treatment of Mathematics Anxiety.
Eddy, Lisa
This paper sought to identify some of the dimensions, correlates, and effective treatments of mathematics anxiety. The introductory section provides a statement of the problem, defines the purpose, organization, and limitation of the study, and includes a glossary of terms. In the second section, an annotated bibliography is presented, organized into three categories: the nature of math anxiety; causes and correlates of math anxiety; and treatments of math anxiety. In the third section, the findings of the literature are summarized. The many correlates of math anxiety are noted, including attitudes, test anxiety, low mathematics self-concept, and sex. The use of behavioral interventions and more academically focused interventions are discussed. Following a brief conclusion, eight recommendations are listed. The appendix provides an annotated list of studies on the validity and reliability of the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale. A 47-item bibliography is also included. (MNS).
