Suggestions for Educational and Therapeutic Interventions with the Rett Syndrome Child.
International Rett Syndrome Association, Inc., Fort Washington, MD.
This paper comprises a compilation of nine case studies of girls (aged 4-16 years) with Rett Syndrome. The educational settings involved are various and include private day school, public elementary school in both integrated and special needs classrooms, and a county-operated preschool program for handicapped children. Each case study outlines the student's behavior, including such behaviors as the hand wringing common with Rett Syndrome children, hyperventilation, breath-holding, the ability of some to walk independently, etc. Suggested educational and therapeutic intervention activities that have been found effective are described, such as total communication approaches, hydrotherapy, bubbles, musical instruments, physiotherapy, eye-pointing, and cause and effect activities.
