Transmuting Resistance to Change
Schuetz, Pam; Barr, Jim
New Directions for Community Colleges, n144 p105-114 Win 2008
Underprepared students have been a significant presence in community colleges for decades. The growing size of this student population and the urgent reality of workforce accountability and other demands that did not exist forty years ago are pushing colleges to find more effective ways to support success for such students. This article steps outside entrenched habits of viewing the underprepared student as the central problem in improving student outcomes to highlight new questions and approaches that include seeing campus challenges from students' perspectives. The authors describe perspectives and methods that can help community colleges move into an ideal position to catapult engagement and achievement to the next level.
