Education by the Numbers
Leadership, v36 n5 p14-16 May-Jun 2007
Education, it seems, is increasingly driven by the numbers. Whether it is measuring student performance or a school district's ability to balance the books, one will find data out there about it. So much data, in fact, that it is difficult to sort through all the numbers to get the needed information. This article describes California's Ed-Data Web site (www.ed-data.k12.ca.us), a Web-based tool that makes quick work of turning raw data about school performance and finances into manageable, clear and useful charts and reports. Organized by level (state, county, district or school), fiscal year and type of data, the site provides multiple ways to approach and view information. Some information, like student demographics, can be compared across all four levels, and some information is specific to only certain levels. What makes Ed-Data so useful is that the columns displayed in the report can easily be changed. When one is finished with one comparison, a few clicks can create a new report. In addition to data and comparisons, the site is an important resource for understanding the public school system. It includes an extensive glossary and articles that provide background and context for the data.
