With the leadership of community college educators and their industry partners, the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program has achieved an impressive record of incubating innovative science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. ATE's mission to increase the quality of technicians working in fields of strategic importance to the nation's economy and security has led to improvements in two-year technical programs, secondary school STEM classes, and faculty professional development throughout the nation. V. Celeste Carter, lead ATE program director within the NSF Division of Undergraduate Education, points to ATE's internship, apprenticeship, and job shadowing programs as examples of the transformative learning opportunities ATE principal investigators have crafted with guidance from industry. "The ATE community has worked with industry, and through these partnerships industry has seen the value of working with educators in developing the types of education programs that they really need so the students who are graduating from these programs are really able to step in to a job and perform almost from day one," Carter says. The profiles of three ATE centers offered here provide a glimpse of the diverse activities that 41 centers engage in to meet national or regional needs within particular disciplines. ATE projects focus on specific workforce or STEM education issues.
