Junk Yard Treasures
Mathes, Len
Arts & Activities, v145 n3 p20-22 Apr 2009
The author describes a project that she developed as a challenge for her students and ended up with some fantastic student paintings. The author told her group of reluctant art students they must first research on the Internet for old, junky cars. The older and more junky the cars, the better. Once a vehicle is selected, it is driven into Adobe Photoshop for a tune-up, repair and restoration. The students then "tweak" the photo to their individual taste and interpretation. It is fascinating for the students to discover that an old chrome bumper might be made up of myriad lavenders, blues and pinks, as well as the presumed grays--color combinations and a technique used by the Impressionists 150 years ago. Each of her students' projects has an abundance of personality, attitude and beauty not before associated (by the students) with "old, junky cars." And every student comes away with enhanced pride and a sense of accomplishment for creating a wonderful work of art.
