Career Readiness: Has Its Time Finally Come?
DeWitt, Stephen
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers (J3), v87 n3 p16-19 Mar 2012
In 2010, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) released a "What Is Career Ready?" definition. As the career-readiness definition explains, there is much overlap between "college readiness" and "career readiness," but academic preparedness for college alone is not enough to be truly career-ready. Career readiness requires students to have the academic, employability and technical skills needed for employment in today's careers. The ACTE has engaged a number of stakeholders in a dialogue about what it means to be career-ready. In this article, the author outlines the challenges in getting consensus on a career-readiness definition, and what progress has been made thus far.
