This study investigated the process of burnout and engagement in layoff survivors. Job demands (job insecurity and work overload) and resources (social support, optimism, career adaptability, and career management self-efficacy) were examined as predictors of burnout and engagement. The sample consisted of 203 adults currently working at organizations that had downsized within the past year. As hypothesized, job insecurity and work overload were positively related to burnout, while social support, optimism, and career management self-efficacy were positively related to engagement. Contrary to hypotheses, career adaptability did not have a positive relationship with engagement. Moderation effects were also examined. Career adaptability moderated the relationship between job insecurity and burnout, while job insecurity moderated the relationship between career adaptability and engagement. This study makes a unique contribution to the literature, as little research has examined personal strengths of layoff survivors, in addition to job characteristics.
