Who's Minding Preschool Children? Trends in the Utilization of Child Care
Neugebauer, Roger
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n208 p8-11 Nov-Dec 2012
Center-based child care and family child care are now part of the fabric of life in the United States. This trend report will review the available demographic information on the types of child care arrangements that parents are utilizing, the expenses related to these forms of care, and the structural characteristics of center-based care. Most of the data for this report was gleaned from reports of the U.S. Census Bureau. In recent years these reports have more accurately captured relevant data about the field. Trends in the utilization of various forms of child care are stabilizing. In 1990, when "Exchange" reviewed trends in the supply of child care, great changes were noted--"Center care has experienced a 400% growth rate in the past two decades." Since 1990, utilization patterns have remained relatively constant. (Contains 6 tables.) ["Who's Minding Preschool Children? Trends in the Utilization of Child Care" was written with Michael Wilson.]
