Interfacing Counseling and Health Psychology in a Medical Setting.
Kerns, Robert D., Jr.; Rudy, Thomas E.
This paper presents an overview of the Counseling/Health Psychology Program at the West Haven Veterans Administration Medical Center (WHVAMC). The organizational structure of the counseling program and its clinical services are briefly described, including consultation, and inpatient and outpatient programs. Historical roots in human psychophysiology, learning theory, and systems theory, which have influenced the development of the program, are discussed. Specific examples of clinical settings and the roles and influence of the counseling psychologist are given for such programs as the West Haven-Yale Pain Management Program and the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. The paper concludes with the identification of future directions for service activities, research, and educational roles for counseling psychologists in medical settings. (BL)
