In the introductory assignment, each randomly assigned group spends about 10 to 15 minutes at each station. The author incorporates as much sensory stimulation in the activity as possible. At the first station, students view a PowerPoint show from a geology class the author participated in at the Grand Canyon. At station two, students look at a wall display of posters of the Grand Canyon. Station three has a Grand Canyon/Colorado River video playing. Students can handle rocks that are similar to rocks that might be found at the Grand Canyon at station four. At station five, students read excerpts of Major John Wesley Powell's journal from his 1869-70 and 1871-72 expeditions, which can be found in Earth History Resources (see Resources). the author has Grand Canyon nature sounds playing and pine-scented candles burning in stations one and two. While visiting the stations, students answer the following questions: (1) What do you see, smell, feel, and hear when you visit each station? (2) What do you think might have caused what you observed in the PowerPoint show? (3) When you look at the objects, posters, slides, and books, what do you wonder about or what do you still want to know? (List three to five questions.) After completing the stations, we have a whole class discussion. Each group shares some of their observations from each station. Then Powell is introduced and his two explorations. Excerpts from Powell's journal are read aloud, and then she asks students to imagine exploring the Grand Canyon. She asks them to describe how his observations might differ if he were to explore the canyon today. What differences and similarities would Major Powell find?
