Helping Students Keep Their Cool
Leaman, David R.
Principal Leadership, v6 n7 p28-32 Mar 2006
Anger can be defined in different ways. In this article, the author defines "anger" as a physiological response to a perceived threat. One of the greatest challenges of educators is managing an angry student in the academic environment. Anger is a common emotion, especially in adolescence, but few know how to use it effectively. The author provides some strategies to help students identify anger and calm down. Although it is inevitable that people--especially teenagers--will get angry occasionally, it is not inevitable that an angry incident will escalate into violence. Helping students and staff members learn how to recognize and manage anger can be a wise investment for the school climate. (Contains 10 resources.)
