Fighting Allergies at School
Taylor, Kelley R.
Principal Leadership, v9 n3 p51-53 Nov 2008
In the last decade, the number of children diagnosed with food allergies has increased significantly--to an estimated 3 million affected in the United States alone (Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, n.d.). As that number increases, so do the articles, legislation, and policies that are designed to address how to best deal with peanut allergies in schools. As pundits question whether food allergies are a disability and student bullies add peanut butter to their arsenal, school leaders have much to discuss. This article emphasizes that schools must provide staff members and students with education, training, and policy on food management to protect students with food allergies.
