Teaching about Assessment in Professional Organizations
Kurylo, Anastacia
Communication Teacher, v21 n3 p93-98 Jul 2007
Students learning about professional communication are not often taught about assessment as indicated by its omission as a chapter topic in many major textbooks in the field. Nonetheless, students need to be educated on this topic because, increasingly, there is a push towards instituting assessment practices in business organizations. Fortunately, teaching the fundamentals of assessment is not complicated. This article presents an assessment activity that enables students to: (1) learn about the stages of assessment; (2) better understand that assessment may be based on multiple dimensions; (3) experience the negotiation that must take place in order to assess; and (4) appreciate the thoroughness that a systematic assessment process provides for decision making. The author has developed this activity for use in courses like Instructional Communication, Organizational Communication, Organizational Assessment, Professional and Business Communication, Research Methods, and Small-Group Communication. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
