Actually the World Is Quite Bumpy: Using Friedman in the International Business Law Classroom
Dhooge, Lucien J.
Journal of Legal Studies Education, v23 n2 p243-259 Aug-Sep 2006
In "The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century," Pulitzer Prize recipient and New York Times foreign affairs correspondent Thomas L. Friedman examines the evolution of globalization in the six years since the publication of his highly acclaimed introduction to the topic in "The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization." As a leading proponent of the inevitability of globalization, to which is ascribed everything from the fall of the Berlin Wall to incipient capitalism and forthcoming democratization in the People's Republic of China, Friedman posits that the time for asking if the world should continue to globalize has long passed. Rather, Friedman attempts to answer the question of how this process should continue and the manifestations it may take in a flat world. The impeccability of the author's credentials and the eminent readability of Friedman's latest effort are beyond doubt. The question for the professoriate is whether the book has a legitimate place in the business classroom and, if so, what caveats should be attached to its utilization. In this article, the author discusses Friedman's book and how it can be used in the international business law classroom. (Contains 81 footnotes.)
