Economic Education Experiences of Award Winning Alaska Teachers.
Thomas, Monica, Ed.
Award-winning economic education projects devised by Alaska teachers included three elementary (K-6) projects and three second level (7-12) ones. Faith Greenough's students (Chinook Elementary School, Anchorage) compared Tlingit traditional and market economies in Alaska, so economics became an integrated part of elementary instruction. Marie Olsen (Fort Yukon School) used a classroom store, "Fairyland Market," to help children understand economic concepts and the function of money, be aware of effects of advertising and the importance of making choices and practice math and language skills. Phil Logan's Gladys Wood Aluminum Can Company (Gladys Wood Elementary School, Anchorage) collected aluminum cans to sell for recycling, with goals of teaching economic concepts through practical business activities, emphasizing the work ethic, earning money, and promoting conservation awareness. Charles Mattioli (Ben Eielson High School, Fairbanks) taught students financial planning through study of inflation, investment options, taxes, insurance, and investment planning. Joyce Muehlenbach-Ower (East Anchorage High School) concentrated on housing rental to teach basic economic concepts, survival skills, and costs of economic independence. Marcia Keyes and Linda Thibodeau (Ryan Junior High School, Fairbanks) created an imaginary crisis that cut Fairbanks off from the world, to introduce students to the Fairbanks and Alaska interior economies.
