Ensuring Student Success: A Handbook of Evidence-Based Strategies.
Friedman, Myles I.
The purpose of this book is to help educational change agents and educators ensure student success through high school by implementing educational practices that research has shown to be effective. The intended audience includes legislators, school board members, educational administrators, teachers, representatives of educational organizations, business organizations, government agencies, and others who work to improve student academic achievement. The book is divided into two parts. Part I, "Key Issues," defines and clarifies critical issues and, what the book calls, the central problem that requires immediate attention. Part II, "Prescriptions," contains seven chapters that prescribe specific solutions. Most prescriptions are based on research evidence. The chapter titles are as follows: "Implementing Corrective Tutoring"; "Making Instruction More Effective"; "Promising and Generic Instructional Strategies"; "Empowering Students to Learn on Their Own"; "Preventing Impediments to Learning"; "Effective Preschool Instruction"; and "Teaching Students to Innovate." These seven chapters cover a wide range of topics and practices, including utilizing repetition effectively, keeping students on task, facilitating teamwork, direct instruction, controlling classroom disruptions, whole-language instruction, and reducing school violence and crime. (Contains a subject index and an index of researchers.) (WFA)
