Most Business Editors Find Journalism Graduates Still Unprepared
Pardue, Mary Jane
Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, v69 n1 p49-60 Mar 2014
In 2002, a study was published in "Newspaper Research Journal" that explored the preparedness of graduating journalism students to cover business news. In 2012, a follow-up survey of business editors at the nation's daily newspapers was done to see whether progress had been made in the training of journalism students for the business news beat. More than half of the editors in 2012 still rated journalism graduates unprepared, reflecting a call once again for academia to recognize that business journalism is a reporting area in high demand, requiring specialized skills that often are not taught at universities.
