Determining Subject Matter Content for Military Supervisors' In-House Training on Control of Burnout. History, Philosophy, and Practices of Adult Education.
Torbert, James Brison
A study was undertaken to identify appropriate subject matter for an inhouse training seminar to help military supervisors control their feelings of burnout. Current literature in the field of professional and worker burnout was reviewed to identify potential topics for inclusion in the seminar. Next, 6 experts from the Phoenix (Arizona) National Guard were asked to rate 40 topics pertaining to burnout and burnout prevention that were identified in the literature review. All topics that received a rating of 3.5 or higher (on a 5-point Likert-type scale) were included in the seminar outline. The experts surveyed indicated that a self-evaluation sheet on burnout should be included as an exercise in the seminar. They also rated the following topics as important for inclusion in the seminar: stress management, psychological effects of burnout, burnout prevention techniques, problem-solving techniques to prevent burnout, survival skills in combating burnout, symptoms of burnout, the concepts of positive living, time management techniques, and the key components of initiating motivation. A course outline and self-evaluation worksheet were subsequently developed and are attached to this report. (MN)
