Teasing and Harassment: The Frames and Scripts Approach for Teachers and Parents.
Hoover, John H.; Olsen, Glenn W.
How can schoolyard bullies be stopped? How can sensitive children become more resilient? How can teachers and parents help youngsters deal with teasing and taunting? This guide--for teachers and parents of children in grades K-12--helps to answers these questions and others like them. It uses the "frames-and-scripts" approach, a method based on social-learning theory, to provide techniques for preventing and countering low-level aggression at school and at home. "Frames" are mental pictures teachers and parents can use when helping children understand the complexities of teasing and being teased. "Scripts" are words and phrases that teachers and parents can use in developing understandable explanations of teasing and taunting. Chapter 1 introduces the frames-and-scripts model and defines important terms associated with teasing and taunting. Chapter 2 examines the relationship between teasing and bullying, the lifelong consequences of bullying, and the importance of prevention. Chapter 3 addresses the issues of language and social growth, and the importance of age-appropriate interventions. Chapter 4 establishes a guiding philosophy that serves as the basis for the techniques used later in the guide. Chapter 5 offers ways to apply the frames-and-scripts model to deal with bullying. Chapters 6 and 7 further develop the concepts and applicability of frames and scripts. Chapter 8 reviews the importance of adult responses to adolescent teasing and harassment in the overall prevention of violence in schools. Five appendices contain checklists, worksheets, and resources, including videos and websites. (Contains 57 primary resources.) (WFA)
