Help Your Child Succeed in School: Parenting Skills That Work. [Videotape].
Squier, William; Simmons, Susan
Not every child copes easily with the challenges school presents, and not every parent knows how to effectively help a child meet these challenges. This parent workshop video program builds from realistic scenarios of parent and child struggles over school to present parents with the tools they need to help children develop self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-esteem. The 44-minute program video is divided into 13 parts. The first six parts deal with areas of building self-confidence: (1) handling negative feelings; (2) handling excuses; (3) handling anger and frustration; (4) handling fear; (5) handling mistakes; and (6) handling grades. The next three parts cover aspects of developing self-discipline: (7) setting goals; (8) creating a homework plan; and (9) staying on task. The next two parts cover areas of life at school: (10) social problems; and (11) parent-teacher conferences. The final instructional section covers creating positive attitudes. A wrap-up section notes that the key to helping children succeed in school is a heart that's open to their feelings and a mind that's open to their ideas. Print materials accompanying the program video include a description of the program and its learning objectives, an 18-item bibliography, a script of the video, and reproducible hand-outs for parents and for children to use at home.
