"Word Power" (Vocabulary Development).
Voorhees, Roxy
Containing numerous vocabulary-building activities and exercises, this guidebook is designed to help elementary students learn to manipulate language as they gain concrete experiences with words, increase their "word power," and have fun. The activities described involve dictionary games, synonyms, "saidonyms" (alternatives for the overused word "said"), connotations, worldwide words, occupations, slang, graffiti, male/female words, homes, groups, young and old, mothers, famous pairs, word triplets, word quadruplets, similes, proverbs, alliteration (when several words begin with the same sound), picture words, anagrams, cliches, rhyming words, and rebus (an enigmatic representation of a name, word, or phrase by pictures, letters, or numbers). An answer key is provided. In addition, 30 vocabulary-building exercises are included, such as (1) unscrambling jumbled words, for example changing "l a i c l" into "lilac"; (2) identifying possessions by filling in questions such as "Haley's" with the word "comet"; and (3) creating strings of words by having the first letter of each word start with the last letter in the previous word, for example "table envelope elephant."
