Wellhousen, Karyn; Giles, Rebecca M.
Childhood Education, v82 n2 p74 Win 2005
Learning centers are a highly regarded and widely accepted practice in early childhood classrooms. Centers offer a variety of experiences during a single time segment that encourage children to explore materials, interact with peers, and accomplish new tasks. In this article, the author presents the block center, a popular mainstay among learning centers, which is typically associated with learning basic mathematical skills and concepts. This center provides a context for reading and writing with a purpose, along with an excellent opportunity to incorporate a wealth of stimulating literature. This article examines how block play contributes to children's learning in the area of literacy. Thus, the authors state that through their block play, children are introduced to crucial concepts needed for success in early literacy, including visual discrimination, use of abstract symbols, and oral language production.
