Using the Balanced Scorecard to Enhance Undergraduate Education in a First Year Business Course: A Pilot Study
Hunt, Irma; Taylor, Ronald K.; Winter, Anthony; Mackie, J. Jay; Fisher, Daniel
Journal of Education for Business, v91 n3 p132-137 2016
Several research studies found that managers lacked a basic understanding of a balanced scorecard (BSC) approach to evaluate an organization. Because of this, the authors saw an opportunity to reorganize a course in order to provide students with an opportunity to address this issue. Therefore, a recent pilot study was conducted to ascertain student understanding of the functional areas of business. Students were assigned a BSC project in a foundational course, and completed a survey to establish if the BSC enhanced their knowledge and understanding of business disciplines within an organization. Based on students' perceptions, it was concluded that a better understanding of how businesses operate holistically was attained.
