A Longitudinal Study of Teachers' Professional Development through an International Exchange
Purves, Ross; Jackson, Anita; Shaughnessy, Julie
Journal of In-service Education, v31 n3 p545-568 Sep 2005
The Teachers' International Professional Development (TIPD) Programme was launched by the British Council in 2000 in response to a Government Green Paper on teacher training. This provides opportunities for teachers to participate in international study visits to gain first-hand experience of good practice. As part of this programme, eighteen Information and Communications Technology (ICT) specialist teachers from primary and secondary schools in a large United Kingdom city were paired with teachers in the USA to observe, teach alongside and develop collaborative projects. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected both prior to the 2-week study visit and then over a 20-month period by questionnaires, journals and interviews. The results are presented in terms of the factors that influenced the success, or not, of joint projects, and the key features that influenced pedagogy, professional development, school policy and resourcing.
