Painting cityscapes is a great way to teach first-grade students about warm and cool colors. Before the painting begins, the author and her class have an in-depth discussion about big cities and what types of buildings or structures that might be seen in them. They talk about large apartment and condo buildings, skyscrapers, art museums, libraries, shopping malls, bridges, towers, and so on. When introducing color, the author uses visuals from a mural painted on the wall of her classroom. She uses this mural to show and discuss the warm colors Paul Gauguin used in his work, "Two Women on the Beach," and the primary use of cool colors in Van Gogh's "Bedroom in Arles." In this activity, students will: (1) learn basic vocabulary related to their study of art; (2) explore the elements and principles of design; (3) look at nature and works of art as visual resources; (4) know the environment influences the look and use of art, architecture and design; and (5) communicate basic ideas by producing design art forms.
