"Where Brains Had a Chance": William Mayo and Rhetorical Instruction at East Texas Normal College, 1889-1917
Gold, David
College English, v67 n3 p311 Jan 2005
The rhetorical training of students at East Texas Normal College is examined with reference to the rhetorical practices and educational ideologies of William Mayo, the experiences of his students and the features of his teaching. Examination of the history of schools like East Texas Normal College helps in dealing with concerns regarding negotiating the differences of power and authority in the classroom and the standards of usage.
