Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can cause multiple medical and functional problems. As the brain is involved in regulating nearly every bodily function, a TBI can affect any part of the body and aspect of cognitive, behavioral, and physical functioning. However, TBI affects each individual differently. Optimal management requires understanding the specific combination of challenges each person faces and formulating an individualized treatment plan that addresses these issues. Moreover, recovery from a TBI is a dynamic process and as the individual improves, the issues that need to be addressed in all aspects of functioning can and often change. Therefore, it is equally important to regularly re-evaluate the individual with a TBI and adjust the treatment to meet changing needs due to changes in functioning. For those individuals who incur a TBI and have significant medical issues and/or impairments cognitively, behaviorally, or physically that make returning home unsafe, inpatient care is necessary.
