Visual Literacy Connections to Thinking, Reading and Writing.
Sinatra, Richard
Providing both rationale and technique for practitioners, this book emphasizes the influence of visual literacy upon the reading, writing, and creative development of learners. The nine chapters of the book are arranged into three sections, with the first setting forth the basic components of visual literacy and how they manifest themselves in activities such as writing, reading, and computer programing; the second exploring the world of the visual system and how the brain and individual styles of learning operate during verbal and nonverbal learning; and the third offering strategies to help children make visual-verbal connections and to retain, comprehend, and compose discourse. Specific chapter titles are as follows: (1) "The Primacy of Visual Literacy on Thought," (2)"Development and Interface of Ensuing Literacies," (3) "Perspectives of Visual Literacy," (4) "The Visual System and Brain Processing," (5) "The Distinctive Features of Verbal and Nonverbal Literacies," (6) "A Learning Style View of Visual Literacy," (7) "Constructs of Visual/Verbal Learning," (8) "The Visionary Aspects of Composing and Comprehending," and (9) "Interfacing the Verbal and Nonverbal during Reading and Writing." Three appendixes contain visual literacy curriculum and resource guides, visual literacy journal and association resources, and picture tests. (FL)
